After a long, brutal summer, temperatures are finally easing into the upper 90s and low 100s. Right on cue, a fresh round of monsoon storms is moving in, with chances ramping up Thursday night through Labor Day weekend. If you're hosting or just want your pool ready for the holiday, now's the time to get ahead of it.
Relief and disruption, back to back
This year's monsoon season has run below normal, but a late-season boost, possibly pulling in tropical moisture, is changing that fast right as the holiday weekend approaches. That combination, finally cooling off, but storms incoming, means pools are about to swing quickly from hot, stable summer conditions to sudden rain, wind, and debris.
Your pre-storm checklist
- Skim now. Get ahead of any wind-blown debris before storms roll in, rather than dealing with a pool full of leaves and dust after the fact.
- Check your chemical balance. Rain dilutes your chemicals fast. Testing and adjusting before the storm hits gives your pool a better starting point once the rain clears.
- Secure loose items. Floats, pool toys, and furniture can end up anywhere in a strong monsoon wind. A few minutes securing things now saves a scramble later.
- Plan to rebalance after, too. Even with prep, storms typically dilute chemicals enough to need a follow-up test and adjustment once they pass.
Why this matters for your holiday weekend
Labor Day is one of the biggest pool-usage weekends of the year. A pool that's cloudy, off-balance, or full of debris right before guests arrive is a frustrating, and avoidable, way to start a holiday.
